The Colorado Public Utilities Commission has approved a new area code overlay — 983 — that will serve the Denver metropolitan area, Brighton, Thornton, Westminster, Castle Rock, Columbine, Englewood, Erie, Highland Ranch, Lakewood, Littleton, Longmont and Wheat Ridge.
The new area code serves the same geographical areas as the 303 and 720 area codes. With the overlay, current phone numbers will remain the same, and the price of the call, coverage area, other rates and services will not charge.
Effective June 17, customers who request a new service or additional line will be assigned the new area code 983. When given the new area code, customers must dial the 10-digit phone number, which is the area code and phone number for local calls, as done before using the 303 and 730 area codes.
When making long-distance, 1 plus the 10-digit phone number must be used. Equipment with automatic dialing or that is programmed also must be updated with the 983 area code.
People with the new area code are also advised to update contact lists on wireless phones, PBXs, fax machines, internet dial-up numbers, speed dialers, call forwarding, voicemail services, medical alert devices, safety alarm security systems, gates, ankle monitors and other similar equipment.
