Threat comes with opportunity

COVID-19 is perhaps the greatest threat to our collective lives — or maybe, one of our greatest opportunities.

A May 14 article in the May 14 issue of The Lone Tree Voice brings both into stark contrast. “Defiant Eatery Draws a Crowd” was the front-page headline and the article went on to celebrate (?) the defiance of the owners of C&C and the crowd that joined them on Mother's Day. Why? Why disregard the threat of COVID-19 that is rushing thousands to an early grave? Why disregard a law adopted to keep citizens of Colorado reasonably safe? It certainly is not a comfortable law and thousands of our citizens are suffering financial stress and fear, but who wants to be one of the victims who doesn't live to experience the recovery?

As we hope and pray that family and friends — and ourselves — will be survivors of this pandemic, we can be overwhelmed by fear and anger. We can also look for opportunities on this treacherous road. During the shutdown of C&C Coffee and Kitchen, we have another opportunity to support April Arellano and other small business owners with moral, financial, physical support. We can reach out to family, friends and neighbors whom we might have taken for granted. We can read for entertainment, for knowledge, for increased understanding. Craig Marshall Smith wrote a thought-provoking editorial in this same edition of The Lone Tree Voice. Without diminishing the burden this pandemic and shutdown are having on our lives, he managed to refresh my memory of other terrible periods we survived. We can make this another successful survival story.

This is the toughest period of history that I, and many of you, have experienced, but I see an immediate, compelling opportunity to grow wiser and kinder and even make a positive contribution.
